Blood Transfusion and Donation: Balancing Beliefs, Myths, and Safety

In the world of healthcare, access to safe blood transfusion is a matter of life and death.
However, amidst its potential to save lives, there are still persistent beliefs and misconceptions that cloud the perception of blood transfusion in society.

Mr Kufreabasi Aquaowo Ibokette, a devout Christian and follower of Jehovah’s Witness, staunchly believes that injecting blood is a sin.

Drawing from biblical references, he argues that blood is not meant for medicinal purposes and should not be relied upon to save lives. Instead, he advocates for alternative solutions like blood volume expanders.

Dr Fa’eez Usman Ahmad, a doctor at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, acknowledges the existence of blood volume expanders, aligning with Mr Ibokette’s views. However, he sheds light on their unreliability, stating that plasma volume expanders may not consistently yield the desired results.

Dr. Ahmad addresses prevailing myths surrounding blood transfusion, attributing them to fear and misunderstandings within society.

Farida Banwo shares her mother’s harrowing survival story, underscoring the critical role of immediate blood transfusion.
Fortunately, Farida’s brothers were able to donate blood, sparing their family the arduous search for a suitable donor.

Through her account, she highlights the profound impact of familial support in facilitating life-saving transfusions.

Ensuring Blood Transfusion Safety

Collective Effort Studies conducted by the Mental Health Foundation reveal the remarkable benefits of donating blood.
Not only does it reduce stress and enhance emotional well-being, but it also fosters a sense of belonging and helps identify underlying health issues through the screening process.

The World Health Organization (WHO) emphasizes the need for coordinated national blood supply networks. With national blood policies and legislative frameworks, uniform standards, quality, and safety of blood and its products can be upheld. However, the presence of specific legislation varies across income groups, reflecting the challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries in ensuring safety and availability.

Global Disparities

Addressing the Imbalance The statistics on blood donation worldwide paint a stark picture. High-income countries, comprising only 16% of the global population, account for 40% of blood donations. This discrepancy puts low- and middle-income countries at a disadvantage in accessing an adequate blood supply.
Urgent intervention is required to bridge this gap and ensure equal access to life-saving transfusions.

Strengthening Infrastructure

Dr Abdulkadir Abdulmuiz, a medical expert at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness and fostering a culture of voluntary unpaid blood donation.

He says the government’s role in facilitating a consistent supply of safe blood is crucial.
Implementing policies and laws that promote regular blood donation drives and equipping blood banks with adequate testing and storage facilities are essential steps toward achieving this goal.

Experts say, Blood transfusion plays an indispensable role in modern healthcare, saving countless lives across the globe. Challenging beliefs, dispelling myths, and promoting awareness about blood donation are vital endeavours in ensuring a reliable and safe blood supply. Through collaborative efforts and government support, the gaps can be bridged, ensuring timely access to safe blood transfusions and ultimately improving the overall health and well-being of individuals worldwide.
